This is a children's book for kids around the ages of 5-6. It presents the concept of good touch, bad touch, good secrets, and bad secrets using the analogy of a surprise birthday party.
Sex ed in the Netherlands begins as early as Kindergarten and yet a good sex ed introduction is serverely lacking in the United States even later in development. Self image, gender stereotypes, and emotional responsibilities behind consent are all important concepts to discuss early. The illustrations in this book address how a child should respond when they experience bad touch, by learning how to say no and identifying people to trust.
An important challenge in this set was to speak to children of all backgrounds. My client and I discussed race and gender stereotypes, and how color and shape can influence the way children can relate to characters.
